After being “severely schooled” at Lingyang Gorge today, I returned to Zhaoqing city center with legs so weak I could barely move. Basically, I didn’t even want to walk. But the problem was—my body was paralyzed, but my stomach was wide awake. I still had to find food.
So, using my “food radar,” I searched for a local restaurant nearby. It was about a fifteen-minute drive away. It was still that typical old restaurant style—not exquisitely decorated, but with a steady stream of customers, clearly surviving on reputation.
We ordered three dishes: the signature fish fillet, seafood supreme buns, and bitter melon with fish intestines. To be honest, the portions were ridiculously generous—not the “delicate small portions” at all, but directly following the local eating pace. Good thing we had just walked a 9-kilometer gorge, otherwise we couldn’t have handled it.
The first dish, the signature fish fillet, was prepared somewhat like Foshan raw fish, but it was a cooked version, making it safer to eat. The fish was very tender and smooth, with clean seasoning.
The second dish, seafood supreme buns, was the highlight of the meal. The fillings were very generous, with plenty of seafood. At 68 yuan per serving, the value for money was off the charts. This dish is the type that makes you nod after one bite.
The third dish, bitter melon with fish intestines, was a relatively authentic local preparation. The bitter melon wasn’t too bitter; instead, it had a slight sweetness, and the aroma of the fish intestines blended well. But the portion was so large that we couldn’t finish it all.
Overall, this restaurant gave much more surprise than expected. It’s the kind of unassuming local eatery that reveals its skill as soon as the dishes are served.
If it’s your first time in Zhaoqing and you don’t want to make a wrong choice, but want to eat something truly local, this old restaurant hidden in the city is worth a try.
