Kaiping Diaolou Cultural Tourism Zone - Majianglong Scenic Area「开平碉楼文化旅游区马降龙景区」

Review

After visiting Chikan Overseas Chinese Ancient Town yesterday, I already had a general understanding of Kaiping Diaolou. This morning, I wanted to see a more original diaolou cluster. I first went to Li Garden, but the ticket was 100 yuan, which didn’t seem cost-effective. So I changed plans and drove twenty minutes to this Majianglong Diaolou cluster.

It’s located at the foot of a mountain, surrounded by villages and bamboo groves, completely different from Chikan. If Chikan’s diaolou are more like buildings in an urban area, Majianglong feels more like rural villas built by overseas Chinese returning to their hometowns. Many overseas Chinese who had lived in the United States, Canada, and other countries returned to build houses here, so these diaolou combine Chinese courtyard layouts with many Western architectural elements.

The ticket price is 45 yuan, and it takes about an hour to visit normally. The environment is very quiet, with good greenery, making for a pleasant stroll. Currently, two diaolou are open for interior visits. There are about five or six relatively well-preserved diaolou, but most of the old houses are uninhabited, lacking a sense of life but adding a touch of time’s passage.

Overall, Majianglong is not very large, and its impact isn’t as strong as I imagined. But its advantage lies in its tranquil environment, allowing you to experience the architecture of overseas Chinese hometowns up close. If you have plenty of time, you can drop by; if your schedule is tight and you have to choose between Chikan and Li Garden, its priority can be lower.

For the overall experience, I’d give it about 70 points.
