This little husband-and-wife shop on Jade Ware Street — I want to be the first person to write a review for it!
On Jade Ware Street, some restaurants have people lining up every day; some small shops, however, quietly operate for many years without even a single review.
I passed by this little shop at noon today and happened to have time, so I went in for a meal. To be honest, it’s an extremely ordinary husband-and-wife diner — not a large space, just five or six tables inside. I remember they were already here during the pandemic and have been running ever since.
No marketing, no advertising, and they’re not even on delivery platforms. The owner’s wife often delivers meals herself on a little e-bike. It’s this kind of unremarkable shop that has made it to today through the hard work of two people.
I think the reason they’ve persisted for so many years comes down to two things: flavor! And value for money!
🥢 Every time I come, I basically only order these four dishes!
1️⃣ Small Wontons
These are, in my opinion, some of the most competitive small wontons on Jade Ware Street — I even think they’re better than many places that advertise Huaiyang-style wontons. A small portion is 10 yuan, a large portion 15 yuan, very affordable. I basically order a portion every time I come.
2️⃣ Fujian Seafood Braised Noodles
This is also one of my regulars. On Jade Ware Street, a bowl of Putian braised noodles starts at 20 yuan at many places, but here you can get it for 15 yuan. For workers who need to solve their daily meals, this price is really attractive.
3️⃣ Putian Qiangrou Noodles
If you want a change, you can try the qiangrou noodles. Also one of my frequent orders, still 15 yuan. Elsewhere, similar qiangrou noodles tend to be more expensive.
4️⃣ Putian Qiangrou Soup with Rice
When I don’t feel like noodles, I go for the qiangrou soup with rice. Simple, hearty, and affordable — the kind of daily staple you can order without hesitation.
These four dishes are basically my fixed menu, averaging around 15 yuan each. If Longjiang pork knuckle rice is the go-to value meal for workers, then I’d say this little shop is just as good, and even has an edge on certain dishes. A 15-yuan Putian braised noodle, a 15-yuan qiangrou — in today’s price climate, that’s truly rare.
🥬 And one detail I never miss! The shop has free chili-fried radish and pickled mustard greens. I always add a little of both. They’re just simple side dishes, but they have a particularly homey flavor. For a small restaurant focused on affordability, these uncalculated little touches actually feel very warm.
Actually, the environment here isn’t great, and the decor isn’t distinctive. But I think a small restaurant that has been open for so many years and still keeps going after the pandemic, during an economic downturn, says something.
The couple has to run the business and raise several children, relying on doing business, delivering food, and serving customers bit by bit every day. No traffic boost, no influencer marketing — just honest food and prices.
Finally, I want to say: not every restaurant worth recommending has to be beautifully decorated or a trendy check-in spot. Jade Ware Street has many such mom-and-pop shops. They don’t understand marketing and aren’t good at promoting themselves, but they’ve been earnestly providing three meals a day for nearby workers.
Today, I’ll be the first to review this place. In the future, I also want to keep discovering these unremarkable but truly worth-eating little shops on Jade Ware Street. I hope more people will notice them, and I hope these seriously run small businesses can keep going.
📍 If you work near Jade Ware Street and want a place with fair prices that won’t hurt your wallet for everyday meals, give it a try. No marketing, just flavor and value. This is the hidden gem on Jade Ware Street I want to recommend.
