Today I came to New DNA for some errands, and when it was mealtime I wanted to find something to eat. I wasn’t really interested in the restaurants inside the mall, so I opened Dianping and searched around. I found a small shop nearby that sells lao ma ti hua (Sichuan-style braised pig trotter soup), and this dish happens to be one of my favorites, so I decisively went over to try it!

🥣 Lao Ma Ti Hua: 85 points. There was a coupon on Dianping, 16 yuan per serving, 10 yuan cheaper than the original price of 26 yuan, quite good value for money. The shop is very down-to-earth, and there isn’t much of a dining atmosphere to speak of. Three small tables are set out front, and basically the owner lady is busy all by herself. After waiting about 10 minutes, the pig trotter soup and potstickers arrived together.

I first took a sip of the pig trotter soup. The flavor was pretty good, overall relatively light, and the pig trotter was stewed until soft and tender, tasting quite fresh. However, compared with authentic Sichuan lao ma ti hua, it’s still a bit different—it lacks the classic kidney bean pairing. But considering the 16 yuan price, the overall performance is already quite good.

🥟 Potstickers: 70 points. I also ordered a portion of potstickers for 10 yuan. These were a bit underwhelming; they didn’t seem like the freshly wrapped and made kind, and the filling was also quite scant. Overall they were passable, without many surprises.

💰 Spending summary: one lao ma ti hua costs 16 yuan, plus one portion of potstickers for 10 yuan. If two people share, that’s 13 yuan per person; one person can also have it as a simple meal. Overall the prices are very affordable. Although this shop’s environment is fairly simple, it wins with friendly prices, and the pig trotter flavor is also on point. Next time I come nearby for errands, I’ll still consider ordering the pig trotter again, and for the staple I plan to try their noodles instead.

If you don’t mind the simple dining environment and just want to spend a little money on a hot bowl of pig trotter soup, this place is worth a try.
