Today, while scrolling through social media, I saw that another Hunan restaurant had opened in Pingzhou, and since it wasn’t far away, I drove over to check it out. The restaurant is inside Taigang City Mall; after parking, I found that it’s actually quite large.

Today was their first day of business, and with a 5.8-zhe (58% of original price) discount, it was really crowded. By the time we arrived there were no tables left, so we took a number and waited in line; it was about 20+ minutes before we were seated. I bought their two-person set meal for 98 yuan, which was quite affordable. Looking at the menu, à la carte dishes were mostly around 30–60 yuan, so it’s mid-range. The restaurant environment was nice, and the decor was quite good-looking.

However, because it was the first day, the staffing was clearly stretched. After validating the voucher, we waited almost another 10 minutes for the first dish, stir-fried yellow beef, to arrive. My first impression when the yellow beef hit my mouth was that it was a bit cold; probably after the kitchen finished it, the waitstaff was too busy and the dish sat for a while before being served. Later I told the floor manager, and he placed a candle underneath to heat it. I’d give this dish about 75 points for taste.

The second dish, stir-fried pig head meat with Hunan dried tofu, felt under-seasoned to me; the dried tofu itself was rather bland, so I only ate about half and left the rest. The vegetables also had an obvious problem: they were sautéed until they looked too dark, yet tasted not fully cooked, and I only ate about 30% of them.

Overall, on the first day with the 5.8-zhe (58% of original price) discount, I can understand the crowds and the slow service, but problems with the food itself are harder to accept. Especially the yellow beef being on the cool side, the pig head meat not being flavorful enough, and the vegetables not being cooked properly—these issues appearing at the same time really affected the experience.

The restaurant also had a promotion where you could get a free wotou (steamed corn bun) if you saved/bookmarked the shop and checked in; I originally thought about taking part, but after eating I really couldn’t write a positive review, so in the end I gave it a pass.

I hope that once they settle into normal operations, the kitchen and service can work out the kinks. After all, the environment and price are actually okay; this time it was mainly the overall performance on the first day that fell a bit short of expectations.
