I had some free time today, so I drove from Foshan to Changzhou Island for a quick look around. The one-way drive was about 45 minutes; the distance actually isn’t far.
This was my first time visiting Changzhou Island, and I found the roads on the island generally narrow. In some places, passing oncoming vehicles is a bit inconvenient, so if you drive here yourself, you should still go slowly.
My first impression of the island as a whole was that it must have been quite lively in the past, but now there really aren’t many tourists, and some places even feel a bit quiet when you walk around. I originally thought it would be a small island with beautiful scenery, suitable for a leisurely stroll, but after actually walking around, I realized that its focus is not natural scenery but rather history and culture.
The island’s main attraction is definitely the former site of the Whampoa Military Academy. In addition, there are quite a few historical sites and memorial places related to modern Chinese history, the Xinhai Revolution, Sun Yat-sen, and revolutionary martyrs. So if you are interested in modern history, bringing children here to learn a bit about history is, I think, meaningful.
But if you’re only here for the scenery, taking photos, or finding a very pretty island for a vacation, you may not want to set your expectations too high. At least from my visit this time, the scenery did not meet my original expectations.
Overall, Changzhou Island is more like a small island with modern history and patriotic education as its theme, rather than a traditional tourist resort island. It’s also not far from Foshan. If you have time, come over for a walk and visit the Whampoa Military Academy; spending about half a day is enough.
