I’ve passed by Yipin Pork Kidney Private Kitchen countless times and never went in to eat. I remember that when I first came to Pingzhou years ago, while staying at the nearby Swan Lake Hotel, this restaurant was already here. That was quite a few years ago. Today I happened to have time and finally remembered to go in and try it.
I ordered a set meal for two, less than 90 yuan, which included pork kidney soup, sesame chicken, and radish omelette. At this price for two people, I think the value for money is acceptable.
First, the signature pork kidney soup. The pork kidney was handled well, with no gamey smell; you can tell the ingredients are quite fresh, not frozen, which is commendable. However, the soup base was a bit clearer than I imagined, not rich enough. Because I’ve had several better pork kidney soups elsewhere, compared to those, this bowl gets about 75 points. The soup also came with a pig brain, but personally I don’t really eat pig brain, so I left it untouched and finished most of the pork kidney and soup.
The sesame chicken was relatively ordinary, not particularly stunning, maybe 70 points; the radish omelette felt similar—home-style, around 70 points.
Actually, the fact that a restaurant has been open here for so many years already shows that there must be quite a few regulars nearby who approve of it. But compared to the pork kidney soups I’ve had, this one didn’t meet my expectations; it’s just average. Of course, taste is subjective; different people have different opinions.
Running a restaurant these days is indeed not easy. Today at mealtime, there weren’t many customers in the shop, and a large area behind has already been demolished and cleared, so the surrounding environment has changed a lot compared to before. After all, this is an old shop that has been in Pingzhou for so many years; I hope it can continue to operate.
If you’re nearby and want an inexpensive place to have some pork kidney soup and home-style dishes, you can still give it a try. As for whether it’s the best bowl of pork kidney soup in your mind, you’ll have to taste it yourself to know.
