I guess I’m a regular at Big Bear’s by now — basically I go two or three times a week. Not because it’s some internet-famous spot; it mainly comes down to one thing: it’s honest and generous.
Let me be clear first: the place where they actually sell fast food isn’t their shopfront! The shop is mainly where they prep ingredients and cook each day. Every day around 11:30 a.m., they push out a cart and set up in front of the Guming milk tea shop on Jade Street. They basically sell out within an hour to an hour and a half, so if you want to eat, you really need to come at noon. If you’re late, chances are it’s gone.
I think their prices around Jade Street are quite affordable: braised pork rice is 15 yuan, radish and beef brisket is 18, soy-braised pork ribs are 18, and if you want a two-item combo it’s just over 20. Every order includes meat and two kinds of vegetables, with generous rice and sides — enough to fill up a normal adult with no problem.
Why do I come so often? Besides the value for money, the main reason is that their meat is relatively fresh. You can actually tell from the first bite; it tastes different from meat that’s been frozen for a long time. They go to the market every day to buy ingredients, so their beef brisket and ribs have a more natural meaty aroma and better texture. So even though it’s just a mobile street food stall, I think the taste is better than a lot of proper fast-food restaurants. The radish and beef brisket is what I order the most — at 18 yuan with that portion and flavor, I really have nothing to complain about.
One last reminder: don’t just navigate to their shopfront and wait to eat there!
They only set up at noon, around 11:30 a.m., in front of the Guming milk tea shop on Jade Street, and they pack up when they’re sold out.
If you happen to work near Jade Street and want a lunch that costs around 20 yuan, fills you up, and tastes good, I think this place is worth trying.
