Today I came to Changzhou Island and also checked off Whampoa Military Academy while I was here.
After all, its place in modern Chinese history is quite important. It was founded during the first period of KMT-CCP cooperation, and many later-famous figures were once connected with it. So if you’re somewhat interested in modern history, I think it’s worth coming in to take a look.
The Whampoa Military Academy Former Site itself is free to visit, but remember to book in advance. Inside, some of the original buildings and layout have been preserved and restored, and there are quite a lot of historical materials. If you take your time looking around, you’ll get a more direct understanding of the academy and that period of KMT-CCP cooperation.
A few practical things to keep in mind:
Although Whampoa Military Academy is free, the parking lot outside is not free.
3 yuan per 15 minutes, which is 12 yuan an hour. Also, after parking you’re not right there: it takes about ten-plus minutes to walk from the parking lot to the academy, so leave yourself plenty of time.
Also, there are now military facilities next to Whampoa Military Academy, and some areas are clearly marked no photos and no video. When you see the signs, don’t take out your phone to shoot; this is really important.
On this visit to Changzhou Island, my impression is that it wasn’t as lively as I expected. Along the way, I saw quite a few street-facing shops closed and relatively few people around, which is a bit different from the feel of a popular tourist island.
But speaking only of Whampoa Military Academy, I think it’s worth visiting once. Especially for people interested in modern Chinese history, looking at the historical materials while standing inside these old buildings feels different from just reading about them in books.
