Review
On this Sichuan road trip, Bipenggou was recommended by a friend. I didn’t have high expectations at first, but after visiting I actually think: this place is really worth coming to!
If you think Jiuzhaigou is too crowded and still want to see snow mountains, forests, and highland scenery in western Sichuan, I think Bipenggou is a great choice.
🚗 [Self-driving experience]
We set off from Dujiangyan and drove more than two hours to Bipenggou. The road conditions were pretty good overall, mostly highway. However, mountain highways in Sichuan have quite a lot of speed limits, many sections around 90 km/h, so although the distance isn’t particularly far on paper, you still need to allow enough time.
We arrived at the scenic area around 1 p.m., parked, bought tickets, and went straight in.
🏔️ [Bipenggou is really huge]
After entering the scenic area you still have to take the scenic bus up the mountain. From the entrance to the first main scenic spot, the drive is about 15–20 minutes, then to continue further up you take another ride of over ten minutes.
And there’s one thing I have to complain about:
Many of the transportation options inside the scenic area, like buses and electric carts, require separate fees! Going all the way from the bottom to the top, various transportation costs add up to more than one hundred yuan.
I personally don’t really like this charging method. It feels like after buying the entrance ticket, you still have to pay for transportation layer by layer once inside.
But—
The scenery is undeniably beautiful!
🌲 [Completely different feeling from Jiuzhaigou]
What is most stunning about Jiuzhaigou is the water, that exquisite, dreamlike beauty; Bipenggou gave me a more vast and majestic feeling.
Visitors here are clearly not as dense as in Jiuzhaigou. The views are very open, and along the way you can see forests, meadows, streams, and snow-capped mountains.
We went all the way up to Yanziyan at the top. Once there, you really feel surrounded by mountains; all around are towering snowy peaks.
Although it was summer and most of the snow had melted, you could still see a bit of remnant snow on the peaks. Standing there looking around, the vastness and grandeur of the western Sichuan plateau really hits you.
If you come in autumn or winter, I think the scenery would be even more stunning.
⭐ [My rating]
Scenery: ★★★★★
Recommendation: ★★★★★
Crowd density: ★★★★☆
Scenic area transport fees: ★★★☆☆
If you’re road-tripping in Sichuan and love snow mountains and the natural scenery of western Sichuan, I really recommend adding Bipenggou to your itinerary.
Especially for friends who don’t like crowds, this place is much more relaxed than Jiuzhaigou.
Although the transport fees inside the scenic area made me complain a bit, the moment I saw the snow mountains around Yanziyan, I still felt—this trip was worth it!
