Today I passed by Guorui Shengpingli right at mealtime and was just thinking about what to eat when I noticed a new shop inside—Wanfeng Dumpling House.
At first glance at the storefront, I was actually a bit puzzled: how did this look like a dumpling shop? The overall decor was more like a stylish little cafe. After going in and sitting down, I realized the owner herself is someone with her own ideas. She opened this shop mainly because she wants to seriously make ‘delicious dumplings.’
Many restaurants now, for convenience, prepare fillings and dishes in advance. But this place insists on fresh ingredients, mixing fillings on the spot, and wrapping dumplings fresh. At least you can really taste that freshness.
I was hungry and alone today, so I ordered quite a lot: chive and shrimp dumplings, handmade zhajiang noodles, plus two drinks.
The chive and shrimp dumplings were 22 yuan per portion, which I think is really not expensive for this location. The first impression upon biting in was that the dumpling skin is very chewy, the filling is substantial, and the shrimp has a clear texture. The seasoning isn’t too heavy; the saltiness is moderate, which actually suits Cantonese tastes.
The zhajiang noodles also surprised me a bit. The noodles themselves have a great texture, quite springy, and after mixing, the sauce aroma is pleasant—not the kind that is overly salty or oily.
Another thing worth mentioning is their dipping sauce, which is a house-made secret sauce with its own character, and it goes quite well with the dumplings.
The drinks in the shop also look good, and the whole environment felt special to me—not like a traditional dumpling shop where you eat and leave, but more like sitting down for afternoon tea. Slowly eating a few dumplings and sipping a drink makes the whole pace more relaxed.
I think this shop is suitable for bringing children, and also for people who care about ingredient quality and like quiet meals.
Overall, this was a shop I stumbled upon while passing by, and it turned out to be a pleasant surprise. The price isn’t expensive, the environment is comfortable, and the dumplings have their own character.
If you happen to pass by Guofengli, you can go in and try it. At least for me, this is a small shop I’m willing to visit a second time.
