Zhongwei Chicken (Kangyi Garden Branch)「众味鸡(康怡花园店)」

Review

Today I finished some business at the nearby Ping An Bank just in time for lunch, and I spotted this popular restaurant that’s been around for over a decade—Zhongwei Chicken. I figured if it’s been operating for so many years, it must have something special, so I decided to give it a try.

Upon entering, my first impression was that the lighting was rather dim, the atmosphere felt a bit cold and quiet, and there weren’t many diners. Since the place is called ‘Zhongwei Chicken,’ I definitely had to order their signature chicken. I asked the owner if they had chicken leg rice, and he recommended the 23-yuan Guifei Soy Sauce Chicken Leg Rice set, which includes a chicken leg, bok choy, rice, and a bowl of soup—fairly affordable.

However, the overall experience didn’t meet my expectations. The biggest letdown was the quality of the chicken. The chicken leg was on the tough side, lacking the smooth skin and tender meat that soy sauce chicken should have. The chicken skin also wasn’t glossy enough; it looked unappetizing. Personally, I prefer freshly made rose-scented soy sauce chicken, with golden, translucent skin and juicy, tender meat. This one seemed like it had been sitting out for a while and then reheated, compromising both texture and flavor.

All in all, 23 yuan is not expensive and you can get a full meal, but if you come specifically for their signature chicken, I think there’s room for improvement. I’d rate it 65 out of 100. It was an average experience, and I probably won’t make a special trip here again.
