Today I went with a friend to visit relatives in Shanghai. Afterwards, we found a restaurant in a new shopping mall that specializes in Zigong cuisine from Sichuan. Since I haven’t been to Shanghai for a while, I noticed many new malls are becoming more stylish. The decor of this Sichuan restaurant was indeed tasteful, with a youthful and upscale vibe.
We ordered three signature dishes: boiling fish, bullfrog, and their special stir-fry. To be honest, the spiciness here is on the heavy side, typical of Zigong cuisine, not the mild, modified version. But the fish and bullfrog were well-cooked, tender and flavorful, with good control of heat, showing the kitchen’s skill.
Especially the boiling fish, which had a strong aroma when served, with the flavors of chili and Sichuan pepper hitting you immediately. It was both numbing and spicy while retaining the freshness. The bullfrog was also clean, without any muddy taste, and the meat was springy.
Overall, if you can handle spicy food or prefer authentic, heavy-flavored Sichuan cuisine, this place is worth a try. The environment is nice, the food is consistent, and it’s suitable for gatherings with friends.
