Today I picked up my daughter from school. My wife said there’s a good local-style noodle shop nearby, so we came to ‘Sanmao Noodle House’ opposite Shanghai Book City. Maybe it was past meal time, so we were lucky and didn’t have to queue.
Their ‘Signature Big Pork Noodles’ really have the authentic taste of old Shanghai local noodles. The big pork is cooked in the traditional thick oil and dark sauce style, very flavorful, with distinct layers of fat and lean meat. It’s soft and sticky but not falling apart, with a strong sauce aroma. The noodles are also typical local style, very fragrant after absorbing the soup.
The atmosphere in the shop also has an old Shanghai feel, not the trendy decoration, but more of a down-to-earth vibe. Honestly, if you want to eat authentic Shanghai local noodles, this place is worth a try.
Another thing that surprised me is that, given the location, their prices are quite affordable. The signature big pork noodles plus a piece of vegetarian chicken cost only about 28 yuan. Near Shanghai Book City, this price and quality offer great value. Before leaving, I packed two pieces of big pork to take home for my wife to enjoy!
