Today, a friend treated me to a meal at this long-established restaurant in Pingzhou—Dajiding Firewood Hotpot. I’ve been here more than once, and this time I’ll write a serious review for everyone’s reference.

This place has almost no promotion on Dianping; its reputation is built on word-of-mouth from local neighbors, making its popularity more genuine. The dishes are very distinctive, all cooked in large iron pots over firewood—chicken, goose, and fish. When a pot is served, it’s full of smoky flavor, giving a rustic taste that gets better as you eat.

In terms of taste, I’d give it 80 points. It’s not refined, but it’s fragrant and substantial. Slow-cooking over firewood gives the food a certain “strong heat” quality, which from a TCM perspective is warming and nourishing. It’s very satisfying, especially for gatherings with friends or on cool days.

The prices are typical for mass consumption, offering good value without much pressure on the per-person cost—a big plus.

As for service, I should clarify upfront: it’s mostly run by aunties, in a traditional small-shop style. Service is almost nonexistent; it’s more of a “take care of yourself” model. If you’re looking for service experience, you might be disappointed, but if you’re here for the taste and atmosphere, it’s not a big issue.
