A few days ago, our family came to Mount Emei, a sacred Buddhist site, with reverence and devotion.

We drove to the parking lot early, then transferred to a shuttle bus, and after that still had to walk about 1.5 kilometers to reach the cable car. Because it was the peak summer holiday season and Mount Emei limits visitor numbers each day, the cable car queue also took over an hour.

From setting out in the morning to actually reaching the Golden Summit, it took about three hours in total. We didn’t actually walk very far; most of the time was spent waiting in line.

But the moment we truly stood on the Golden Summit, it all felt worth it.

Clouds and mist swirled around, as if the entire Golden Summit were suspended in a sea of clouds. Looking up, we saw the towering statue of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva of the Four Faces and Ten Directions; the golden Buddha image appeared and disappeared through the clouds. That solemnity and awe is hard to fully capture in photos.

Our family offered incense and reverently paid respects to Samantabhadra Bodhisattva. We didn’t have many complicated wishes—just hoping that our family would be safe and healthy, and that everything would go smoothly.

On the way down, we ran into heavy rain again. We had originally thought about hiking down, but fortunately we took shelter near Tunnel No. 2 just in time. By the time we truly got back down the mountain, it was nearly 6 p.m.

After this trip, I have even more admiration for those who truly hike up Mount Emei. I’ve heard that hiking all the way up may take more than ten hours or even longer, so for me it’s still ‘admiration, but not a challenge.’

From the foot of Mount Emei to the Golden Summit, the climate changes dramatically, and the temperature at the top is much lower. Be sure to bring a thick jacket before you come.

Some come for the scenery, some come for the challenge, but this time, we came with a sense of reverence.

Mount Emei’s Golden Summit is worth visiting once.

Not just to check it off a list, but to make a wish for peace for ourselves and our family above the clouds.
