Mianhu Town「棉湖镇」

Review

It was because of watching the movie “Love Letter to Grandma” that I became interested in this small town in western Jieyang—Mianhu Town.

The inn featured in the movie was filmed in a small alley called Datie Street in Mianhu Town. Also, the scene with wumi guo (a type of snack) was shot here. Thanks to the movie’s popularity, this once ordinary street has gradually become known to more people.

But after arriving, I found that its greatest charm isn’t just “movie check-in”—it’s the authentic small-town life atmosphere preserved here.

Datie Street isn’t fenced off for tickets, nor has it been overly commercialized. It’s a real old street. The shops and buildings on both sides remain in their original state, with some old houses and traces of life still visible. Walking through it feels like stepping back into a Chaoshan street from a hundred years ago.

Parking is convenient too, with a nearby lot that charges very little. It’s about an hour’s drive from Jieyang Ancient City. If you like the movie “Love Letter to Grandma” or want to experience genuine Chaoshan town vibes, I think it’s worth a special trip.

Besides the old buildings, one thing that impressed me was the many Chaoshan ancestral halls preserved here. Some are exquisitely built and grand, likely renovated by descendants who achieved success. These structures vividly reflect the Chaoshan people’s emphasis on clan, family heritage, and roots.

Compared to highly commercialized ancient towns, Mianhu Town, with its lack of excessive packaging and preserved original life, has more flavor and lets you truly feel the local history and culture.
