Jieyang Ancient City「揭阳古城」

Review

Today I came to Jieyang and specifically toured Jieyang Ancient City. The overall experience exceeded my expectations, making it one of my favorite ancient cities during this Chaoshan trip.

I think it has several advantages. First, the ancient city has preserved quite a bit of its historical appearance, and walking through the streets and alleys still gives a strong old-town atmosphere. Second, the entire ancient city is open for free without the need to purchase tickets, which is quite generous.

Additionally, most of the shops in the ancient city are run by locals, not the kind of tourist street that sells uniform souvenirs. The atmosphere is full of local life, making the visit feel more authentic. Although there is some commercialization, the overall scale is well-controlled and doesn’t feel overdeveloped.

Another thing I really like is that it hasn’t been overly promoted, so there aren’t many tourists. I could walk slowly and browse without crowds or queuing for photos, which is much more comfortable than many popular ancient towns.

If you like places with historical depth, a strong sense of daily life, and don’t want to deal with huge crowds, I think Jieyang Ancient City is well worth a visit. Recommended.
