I’ve always been curious about the folk beliefs in the Chaoshan region, feeling that a lot of traditional culture has been preserved here. Today, visiting the City God Temple in Jieyang Old City, I truly felt that atmosphere.

Even though it was an ordinary day, the temple was filled with incense smoke, and locals came in an endless stream to pray. From their devout expressions, I could sense that this faith has long been integrated into daily life. It’s not just a tourist attraction but an ancient temple carrying local culture and spiritual sustenance.

The entire City God Temple is very well-maintained. The architecture is exquisite, with wood carvings, stone carvings, and ridge paintings all showcasing Chaoshan characteristics—carved beams, painted rafters, and resplendent grandeur. Every detail is worth appreciating slowly. Even as an out-of-town visitor unfamiliar with the deities in the temple, I was moved by the solemn and respectful atmosphere, unconsciously lightening my steps.

If you’re visiting Jieyang Old City, I think the City God Temple is well worth including in your itinerary. Not only can you admire the exquisite traditional architecture, but you can also experience the profound folk culture and religious atmosphere of the Chaoshan region up close. It offers more flavor than just sightseeing.
