Today I stumbled upon a new snack shop called ‘Herbal Soup’ at Chenbaolai Square. It looked quite clean, so I dropped in to try it.
For dinner, I ordered their special offer of 9.9 yuan for Jinxianlian small intestine soup, plus a braised pork belly with vegetable rice set, totaling less than 30 yuan. Overall, it felt like a chain brand model—the taste was average, similar to chain fast food like Zhen Gongfu or Laoniangjiu.
I suspect the dishes aren’t freshly cooked to order; otherwise, they couldn’t come out so fast and be so consistent. The biggest issue with chain fast food is the lack of ‘wok hei’—it doesn’t have that soulful feel of a stir-fry joint. The food quality is neither bad nor amazing.
Would I come often? Probably not. But if I don’t know what to eat occasionally, it’s okay to drop by.
On the plus side, the dining environment is comfortable and cleaner than most small restaurants. Being a chain, management and standardization are in place. The rice and condiments seem decent.
Overall, if you haven’t been, give it a try. Whether it suits your taste is up to you.
