Today was my first day arriving in Chengdu, and it just happened to rain, so I made an impromptu decision to visit Luodai Ancient Town. This is a western Sichuan Hakka ancient town with deep historical heritage. During the Qing Dynasty, many Hakka people from Guangdong, Fujian, Jiangxi, and other places migrated here to escape war, thus forming the unique Hakka culture seen today.
The whole ancient town is not very large; a leisurely loop around it takes about an hour and a half. The streets are lined mostly with traditional shops, snacks, and cultural and creative stores. The level of commercialization is moderate, and overall it has a relaxed ancient town atmosphere. There is nothing particularly stunning, but it won’t disappoint either.
I think the most worthwhile thing to see is the Hakka earthen buildings (tulou) inside. The building is quite grand in scale and is relatively distinctive compared to other ancient towns in Sichuan, making it great for photos and check-ins. If you are visiting Chengdu for the first time and don’t want to go to overly popular, crowded attractions, Luodai Ancient Town is still worth a stop to experience the western Sichuan Hakka culture.
