During this trip to Jieyang, I specifically visited Xitou Market and Ronghua Market. After comparing them, each has its own characteristics.
If you like to experience the daily life of locals, I think Xitou Market is more worth visiting. The market isn’t large, but it’s small yet complete—vegetables, meat, and seafood are all available, and the ingredients are very fresh. There are especially many fish stalls, clearly a place where locals do their daily grocery shopping, full of the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Ronghua Market is a completely different experience. The market itself is already sizable, but what really surprised me was the dense cluster of small stalls around it. If the main market area is considered 1, the peripheral stalls are at least 5 times larger, making it a fascinating place to explore. Overall, it’s larger, more organized, and offers a wider variety of goods. I couldn’t find the specific rice cake I wanted at Xitou Market, but I quickly found it at Ronghua Market.
Actually, whenever I visit a new city, my favorite thing to do is not to go to scenic spots but to visit local markets. Because here, there’s no deliberate packaging—you see the most authentic way of life of the locals, hear the most genuine dialect, and buy ingredients closest to local daily life. Compared to attractions specifically targeting tourists, I find markets have more warmth and allow me to better understand the true face of a city.
