Review

I had heard about Chikan Ancient Town for a long time and had passed by it a few times on trips, but I had never actually gone in to explore. This time, a friend came over, so I accompanied him to check it out.

To be honest, when I first entered and saw the ticket price of 150 yuan per person, I thought it was a bit expensive. But after slowly wandering around, I found that it’s indeed different from other ancient towns I’ve visited. Towns like Suzhou and Tongli are more about Jiangnan water towns with ancient charm. Chikan Ancient Town is more unique—it’s a collection of buildings left by the overseas Chinese culture of Guangdong. Many of these old houses were built by overseas Chinese who made money abroad and returned to build their hometowns. The entire scenic area was renovated and re-planned on the basis of the original old town, so it has both a sense of history and a touch of Republic-era arcade streets.

It’s early July now, and there aren’t many tourists. Many shops are sparsely open, and the crowd isn’t as dense as I imagined. But because of that, it was actually more relaxing to walk around without being jostled, allowing us to take our time and enjoy the sights.

The ancient town has quite a few performances, probably five or six in total, some requiring advance booking and some not. We watched two of them, and overall, the performances were of high quality. The more I watched, the more I felt that the ticket price was worth it.

If you just take a quick stroll, you might not fully appreciate the experience. But if you take the time to explore the architecture, watch the performances, and grab some food, you can easily spend a whole day here. The park seems to be open until around 10 PM, so it’s better to allocate enough time. Overall, my visit to Chikan Ancient Town was full of surprises, and it’s definitely worth a dedicated trip.
