Review

Today, I visited Hailing Island and made the Nanhai No.1 Shipwreck Museum my first stop. I had heard about this Song Dynasty shipwreck related to ancient maritime trade and porcelain exports, and it had been covered by CCTV, so I was quite excited. It was only about a 7-8 minute drive from our hotel.

To be honest, the actual experience was a bit underwhelming. The museum wasn’t crowded, and the atmosphere was rather quiet. Some exhibition areas mainly featured text and images, and the physical exhibits were not as impressive as I had imagined—many were fragments. The core shipwreck area was supported by steel frames; you could see it, but it was hard to get a sense of what the ancient ship originally looked like, which was disappointing.

The entire visit took about 40 minutes. If you’re particularly interested in history, archaeology, or the Maritime Silk Road, it’s worth a visit. But for casual tourists, the content might not be rich enough.

Also, a heads-up for those driving: watch out for parking fees. We paid 20 yuan when leaving, which I felt was a bit of a rip-off. If you can find suitable parking nearby, it’s better to check beforehand to avoid unnecessary expenses. Overall, this attraction is more suitable for a stopover; I wouldn’t recommend coming with high expectations.
